Studying abroad during your college years is a once-in-a-lifetime experience not to be missed! The benefits are numerous. Here are just a few:
"I believe that truly engulfing yourself in another culture can do nothing but provide endless rewards. It paves the way for a more objective world view, and you'll quickly find that the only true cultural divides are the ones that you allow to persist." --Andy M
• In today's globalized world, international experience and intercultural skills are absolutely necessary for a complete education and a successful, fulfilling career.
• Many employers see study abroad as proof that a job candidate is self-reliant, adaptable and comfortable with people who are different from themselves, and thus able to meet the demands of living and working in a multicultural society.
• The College of Science recognizes study abroad as an important form of experiential learning allowing students to connect what they learn through coursework with real-world experience. Participation in an approved semester-long study abroad program fulfills the nine-credit Language and Culture requirement of the College of Science core curriculum.
There are a number of options available for a study abroad experience. The fees for many options (excluding transportation) cost little more than studying in West Lafayette. Scholarships are available! Pick the program that fits your interests, career goals and desire for travel.
"College is the best time to take advantage of travel and Purdue provides assistance in getting there. Not only does it provide an awesome experience, but it gives you a competitive edge in job interviews." --Shadya S.
Pre-articulated programs: A semester-long program at a designated university that matches degree requirements in the College of Science.
Other study abroad programs: You can design your own program at many universities. Your academic advisor will help you in determining equivalent course offerings before your program begins. Students have also picked up some credits by joining groups that travel over Maymester and winter and spring breaks.
Summer study abroad programs: There are many great summer programs where you can experience a different culture, participate in research, an internship, or community service, and/or pick up culture and general education courses in the process.
"My time in Cape Town was perhaps the best five weeks of my life. Even though the class I took wasn't for my major (it did take care of the culture/diversity requirement, though), I feel as though I grew as a person and gained a greater perspective of the world..." ---Joe F.
