Evans named new Science Diversity Office director

Dr. Zenephia Evans

Dr. Zenephia Evans has been named new director of the Science Diversity Office for the College of Science. She served as associate director of the office for more than 10 years while also leading Multicultural Science Programs.

Evans takes over for the retired Barbara Clark, who was the original director and led the office for 20 years. Clark retired on Oct. 31 but she has been working part-time until a replacement could be found. Clark will finish her duties Jan. 16.

A longtime advocate for diversity in the College of Science and the entire Purdue campus, Evans will still oversee Multicultural Science Programs as well as Women in Science Programs.

“Zenephia will be responsible for overseeing the many important programs run out of that office, and for working with stakeholders across and outside of the College to ensure that Science makes steady progress toward its diversity goals,” stated Dr. Jeff Roberts, the Frederick L. Hovde Dean of the College of Science. “In her role as SDO Director, Zenephia will be a key member of the Science leadership team.”

Evans said the move is a “natural progression” in her career path: “As director, I am eager to procure funds for development and improvement of programs to enhance retention of students affiliated with MSP and WISP.

“Most importantly, this position will allow me to combine my passions for student services and erasing disparities that are present in higher education.”

Evans has a doctoral degree from Purdue in cell and developmental biology and has worked as a lab coordinator and faculty lecturer in the Department of Biological Sciences. Previously, she graduated Magna Cum Laude and with distinction from Talladega College.

In addition, Evans is an official scorekeeper for Purdue Women's Basketball, senior faculty fellow in Earhart Hall, an advisor to three student organizations and an avid volunteer in the community.
