Steve Mussmann works on an original problem at a recent meeting of the Purdue Math Club, which he is president of.

Steve Mussmann, a junior studying Honors Mathematics, Statistics, Computer Science and Applied Mathematics, had an April to remember.

Before he was deemed “Outstanding Junior in Mathematics and Statistics” at the April 13 Science Honors Convocation, Mussmann took home the coveted Bruce Helfert Memorial Award, which is presented annually to a junior in the College of Science or the Schools of Engineering who demonstrates outstanding academic achievement and an understanding of the impact of science and technology on humanity. The award is made possible through a gift from Sylvia Helfert, Marina del Ray, Calif., in memory of her son, Bruce Helfert, a 1964 Purdue graduate. He was a surgeon at March Air Force Base, Calif., when he died from injuries received in an automobile accident.

The Helfert Award comes with $1,000.

“I'm very honored to receive this award. I'm especially grateful to my adviser Sue Young who took the initiative to gather letters of recommendation and apply for the award,” Mussmann stated. “I think they were looking for someone who is academic but also knows how to apply academic knowledge to the world. Academics are very important to me and I devote much time to them. However, I have also demonstrated application to the world by completing four research experiences while in college.”

Mussmann will further flex his research muscles in New York working for Bloomberg L.P. as a software developer for 12 weeks.

Mussmann said he plans on pursuing more computer science in graduate school after he graduates in 2015.

I would like to work in research,” Mussmann said, “although I think I would rather do research in industry or a national lab rather than in academia.”
