trusted source for grassroots reviews on restaurants, bars and other businesses.

Several years later, Yelp is worth more than a dozen restaurants combined. The site is a go-to for users to research a restaurant. It is also a loaded gun for the restaurant as a peeved customer can spout off with just a minute or two of typing on their smartphone. Thanks to Michael Stoppelman’s software engineering skills, he has helped change how restaurants are seen online.

Stoppelman honed his skills in the Purdue Department of Computer Science. A 2003 graduate, Stoppelman witnessed the early ‘00s boom but also its fall. Before Yelp, he got experience at Google as a senior software engineer. Today he is senior vice president of engineering at Yelp.

Before he accepted his Outstanding Alumnus honor, Stoppelman visited The Anvil, a student-run entrepreneurship co-working space nestled in the former location of University Church. He met with Computer Science students and gave a presentation on the inner workings of Yelp and how his job has changed in recent years. His success and insight were sure inspiration to the young entrepreneurs.

Stoppelman has made a few visits back to campus since his graduation. But it had been three years since his last time in West Lafayette. Since then, the Department of Computer Science has expanded its enrollment and faculty. It’s now the largest department in the College of Science in terms of undergraduates.

“Finding awesomely talented software engineers and computer scientists, I think Purdue is leading the way in a lot of respects,” Stoppelman said before his talk at The Anvil. “We always have a lot of interns come every year from Purdue to work at Yelp. It’s always amazing to see how talented the kids are that are coming to work for us. We keep increasing the number of students that we bring every year.

“Purdue is doing a fantastic job.”
