Spring Break 2024

The College of Science is offering an exciting opportunity for students to spend Spring Break 2024 exploring science, technology and innovation in Berlin, Germany! Explore artificial intelligence and technology in museums, tour research centers and experience an exciting culture in one of the largest tech hubs in all of Europe!

Program Details 

Location: Berlin, Germany

Dates: March 9-16

Eligibility: The program is open to undergraduate students with a minimum 2.5 GPA. Priority will be given to computer science, data science, and artificial intelligence majors, but all majors are welcome to apply. 

Course Credit: SCI 295: Technology and Innovation in Berlin for 1 credit

Estimated Cost: $3,800

Housing: Students will stay in a hotel in twin rooms

What's Included?

The estimated cost of the program includes the following: 

  • Transportation to and from the airport
  • Roundtrip airfare 
  • Public transit pass in Berlin
  • Entrance to museums and all other activities included in the program 
  • Welcome dinner and farewell dinner 
  • Hotel in a twin room
  • Breakfast at the hotel every day

The following is not included in the program fee: 

  • Passport or visa expenses 
  • Meals and beverages other than those listed above
  • Personal or other miscellaneous expenses 

Application Process 

The application for this spring break trip is officially open! As stated above, priority will be given to CS/DS/AI majors, but all majors are welcome to apply. Applications are due September 29th and will be reviewed by the program leader in the beginning of October. You will receive an email once accepted into the program in early October. Please note that space in this program is limited. You are encouraged to pay your deposit for the program once you are accepted in order to secure your spot. The priority deadline to apply and pay your deposit is Friday, October 20th. Depending on space availability, the program application will remain open through November with a final application deadline of Friday, December 1st

Activities  

During our week in Berlin, you will have the opportunity to explore the city and learn more about how it has developed over time. While seeing sites such as the Reichstag, the Brandenburg Gate, the Berliner Dom, the Holocaust Memorial, Potsdamer Platz and Checkpoint Charlie, you will learn about the city’s transition during World War II and the Cold War, until Reunification in 1990. We will also have a guided tour of the Berlin Wall Memorial, which is the central memorial site of the German division, located in the middle of the capital. It extends along 1.4 kilometers of the former border strip, and your guide will give you an impression of how the border fortifications developed until the end of the 1980s. In addition to cultural activities throughout the week, you will also have several academic and professional activities that will broaden your perspective on the development of advanced technology in Berlin and the value and impact of reseaerch on artificial intelligence in Germany and across the world. 

Below are a few activities we will do throughout the week:

  • Guided walking tour of Berlin 
  • Guided tour of the Berlin Wall Memorial 
  • Day trip to Potsdam to visit the Sanssouci Palace 
  • Visit the German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence (DFKI)
  • Explore Berlin Adlershof, Germany's leading technology and media park 
  • Visit the Computer Games Museum 
  • And so much more! 

 In additon to all of these great activities, you will have free time every day to explore the city at your own pace and visit other attractions in the city.
