Undergraduate Research
Undergraduate research is a vital component of academic growth and intellectual development, offering students a unique opportunity to engage deeply with their field of study. By participating in research projects, undergraduates gain hands-on experience in applying theoretical knowledge to real-world problems, enhancing their critical thinking, problem-solving, and analytical skills. Engaging in research fosters curiosity, creativity, and a passion for discovery, while also providing valuable mentorship opportunities with faculty and industry professionals. Furthermore, undergraduate research serves as a strong foundation for future academic or professional pursuits, giving students a competitive edge in graduate school applications and career advancement. We encourage all students to take advantage of these opportunities to explore their interests, contribute to meaningful projects, and make a lasting impact in the actuarial science field.
Here are some examples of undergraduate research projects completed by our students:
- 2025 Generally Recognized Expense Table (GRET) Recommendation
- 2024 GRET Recommendation
- U.S. Population Mortality Observations – Updated with 2021 Experience
Each year, the Actuarial Science program offers summer research internships specifically for undergraduate students, providing them with the opportunity to engage in hands-on, impactful research. Additionally, students can explore other research opportunities through our dedicated actuarial faculty and the Data Mine learning community. These experiences are designed to deepen students' understanding of the field, enhance their research skills, and prepare them for future academic and professional success.
