Less is More, Unburdening Your Curriculum

Science K-12 Outreach Coordinators introduce teachers to research-grade science equipment

Teachers face an ongoing challenge to "cover" science and mathematics content. Curricula that seem to grow every year along with addressing academic standards to prepare students for exams cause teachers to struggle with fitting more and more concepts into an already full curriculum. This workshop discusses the consequences and challenges of an overfull curriculum and presents strategies for trimming nonessentials.

Objectives for the Less is More Workshop

  • Identify the challenges faced by teachers with curriculum coverage
  • Examine strategies for unburdening a curriculum
  • Employ techniques such as cutting and pruning and eliminating repetition
  • Develop a standards-based lesson that addresses multiple academic standards
