Edward R. Shugart III

"“My high school had two excellent mathematics teachers who provided me with a strong foundation for a satisfying and rewarding career in actuarial sciences. This was a natural choice, once I realized that I did not want to become a chemical engineer like my stepfather."

As a principal in the investment-banking firm of Grigsby Brandford Powell, Inc., Arthur F. Powell was responsible for its marketing efforts in the eastern half of the United States. He also served as president and founder of AGH Financial Corporation and has been associated with the Intel Corporation, the Data Processing Division of the IBM Corporation, and the Missile and Space Division of the General Electric Company. Currently, he is president and chief executive officer of Powell Capital Markets Inc., a firm he founded.

Powell also is involved in many civic and professional organizations such as the Autism Education Foundation of the Morris-Union Jointure Commission. He was the vice chair and founder of the New Jersey Development Authority for Small Business, Minorities, and Women’s Enterprises and a former member of the South Carolina State University Board of Visitors.

CAREER HIGHLIGHTS:

  • 1990: Named President and Chief Operating Officer at Investment Life
  • 1983: Became one of the first to develop and implement Universal Life products for various companies
  • 1982: Named Senior Vice President and Chief Actuary of Integon Corporation
  • 1968: Hired at The Hartford Life as an actuarial student
  • 1965: Became an officer in the U.S. Marine Corps
