Discovery Goal I
1. Each department within the College will achieve distinction nationally and internationally.
Invest in human capital-e.g., achieve competitive take-home compensation for graduate students relative to disciplinary peers; improve compensation and work environment to attract and retain talented staff and faculty; use a mixed strategy of attracting experienced faculty leaders as well as growing strong, young faculty, etc.
Invest in research infrastructure-e.g., establish and support core multiuser research services that operate at competitive cost for use; acquire research facilities (space and equipment) that enable world-class research and serve as advantages for recruiting and sources of pride.
Facilitate and provide additional incentives for generation of research funding from either private or public sources.

Discovery Goal II
2. We will identify and collaboratively solve problems of global significance and impact.
Create more synergies across campus to pursue projects of larger scale-e.g., continue mixed core and COALESCE hiring; establish a formal role in departments to identify potential collaborations that catalyze inter- and multi-disciplinary creativity; offer multi-disciplinary short courses in collaboration with Discovery Park, etc.
Create partnerships and relationships with groups beyond the campus, including other universities and private industry-e.g., establish closer links to federal sponsors and national labs; create regional centers with Indiana University, University of Illinois, and Notre Dame to leverage strengths; host workshops on topics we seek to address and invite experts, sponsors,
Recognize and reward contributions to large-scale research programs in tenure and promotion process.
