Honors programs in Science and at Purdue

Students admitted into the College of Science may have several options to participate in honors programs.

The top 10 percent of our incoming freshman class, or approximately 100 students, will be invited to participate in the College of Science Freshman Honors Program. Freshman Honors Program students will be enrolled in a special one credit hour course called Science 110, which will introduce the students to information about pursuing the honors academic track within their home department and opportunities such as how to get involved with doing research with faculty, leadership and getting involved on campus, networking with faculty, advisors, administrators, and current student mentors, and more. College of Science Freshman Honors Program students are eligible to apply to live in a residential honors learning community at McCutcheon Hall for their freshman year. For more information, visit the Learning Communities, Access, and Retention Programs site

Students can earn an honors certificate along with their diploma by completing the honors academic program within their major. Each major has different criteria which your academic advisor can explain to you when you register for your freshman year classes. Typically, students must complete some honors level courses in their major, and some majors require the student to do research and write a thesis paper.

The University Honors Program (UHP) is an extremely selective program made up of the top one percent of students. Eligible incoming students are contacted by mail in the spring of their senior year of high school, after they've been accepted to Purdue, and invited to apply to the program.
