Frankfort Science Partnership

Improving Inquiry and Standards-based Elementary Science Instruction

The Improving Inquiry and Standards-Based Elementary Science Instruction Partnership between the Community Schools of Frankfort and Purdue University College of Science is a three year $300,000 project funded by the Indiana Department of Education through the U.S. Department of Educationīs Mathematics and Science Partnerships (MSP) program.

Goals for the partnership are to improve the quality of science education provided by elementary teachers and to develop scientific literacy in all students. Twenty-seven teachers representing all elementary grade levels and all four elementary schools in Frankfort have participated in the first two years of the partnership. The partnership includes a two-week summer workshop, a summer science camp for the elementary students, weekly visits by Outreach Coordinators, videotaped science lessons for project assessment, and training throughout the school year.

Each participating teacher implements of a series of inquiry-based lessons, creates a teacher portfolio for science, assists with the development of a group presentation at the HASTI annual conference, and serves as a peer-mentor.
