In 1907, Stanley Coulter was named Purdue’s first dean of science. Around the world over the next one hundred years, the first antibacterial agent was invented in 1910 to combat syphilis; the neutron was discovered in 1932; in 1953, Francis Crick and James Watson discovered DNA’s double-helix structure; and the AIDS virus appeared in the 1980’s, becoming a worldwide epidemic and health concern.
