Big Foot

It’s not hiding in the woods, nor is it an urban legend. But Purdue’s big foot is still hard to find. Sound unbelievable? Just ask 28 Purdue students and their six instructors who spent the better part of spring semester working on it.

This intellectual expedition was the new course “Carbon Neutrality at Purdue.” After a semester of calculations and recommendations, students presented to the community the environmental and financial implications of having such a big foot — and the savings of smaller carbon shoes.

Climate change is a problem that’s not just about physical science. It’s about the human interaction with the physical world.

“The carbon footprint is a rigorous measurement of an organization or institution’s effect on the environment,” says Megan Walker, a graduate student studying earth and atmospheric sciences who was in the class.
