Undergraduate Curriculum Initiative
Background: Pilot Program
The faculty developed a new approach to the general core requirements of the College of Science. Two programs, Actuarial Science and Earth & Atmospheric Sciences initiated a pilot curriculum in the fall 2006 semester.
The Pilot program was intended to introduce a select group of freshmen to the following:
- Experience in technical writing, technical presentation and teamwork;
- Exposure to a multidisciplinary science setting;
- Fundamental exposure to computing and statistical elements;
- Re framing the language requirement to offer experiences with culture, diversity, and study abroad;
- Streamlined general education and laboratory science requirements that still include depth and breadth of subject matter.
- Students participating were provided with the opportunity to learn more about how the new core will use significant experiences in undergraduate research, study abroad, and internships to directly meet the proposed requirements required for graduation.
This new approach maintained the strength and excellence within each discipline, and the faculty in each major area continued to review and enhance the academic experience of Science undergraduates to provide the quality education for which Purdue has long been known.
