Engagement and External Relations
Purdue's mission of engagement is to match Purdue expertise and resources to statewide needs by forming effective partnerships to grow the state economy and improve the quality of life for Indiana citizens. To read more about Engagement activities at Purdue University, please visit the Purdue Office of Engagement website. In order to achieve this mission, Purdue and Indiana share three main goals: educational enhancement, economic development, and service learning. The College of Science is involved in all three areas of engagement.
Educational Enhancement
K-12 Outreach
Our highly successful K-12 Outreach Program was initiated in 1990 to increase interest and achievement in science and math at the pre-college level in Indiana. Our focus is on teacher development, but we also run programs directly for students. Since 1990, our K-12 Outreach Program has directly reached half a million students in Indiana, 2,300 teachers, and we’ve conducted 1,200 days of workshops.
Economic Development
Interns for Indiana Program (IfI)
The Interns for Indiana program (IfI) at Purdue University, funded through the Lilly Endowment, seeks innovative ways to keep Indiana's college graduates in Indiana. By placing high quality student interns with start-up companies, Purdue hopes to accelerate company growth, while providing students with valuable educational experiences.
Technical Assistance Program (TAP)
The Departments of Statistics and Chemistry participate in TAP, a statewide program that provides technical assistance to Indiana businesses and agencies. The Department of Statistics has been involved in over 100 projects in the last five years.
Service Learning
Engineering Projects in Community Service (EPICS)
EPICS is a program in which teams of undergraduates design, build, and deploy real systems to solve engineering-based problems for local community service and education organizations. The Department of Computer Science offers elective credit for EPICS enrollment to give CS students the opportunity to gain the type of skills and experiences, both technical and non-technical, expected by employers. Visit the Department of Computer Science EPICS site for more information.
Statistics in the Community (STATCOM)
Statistics in the Community (STATCOM) is a volunteer community outreach organization that has been serving its local community since 2001. Directed and staffed by graduate students from Purdue University's Department of Statistics, it provides professional statistical consulting services to governmental and nonprofit groups free of charge.
