Alumni NewsAlice Campbell Armantrout (B.S. 1959, Psychology) reports that she opted for early retirement and moved from Indianapolis to Spartanburg, South Carolina to be near her daughter and family, which includes seven grandchildren. Alice’s oldest son and family live in Seattle with four more of her grandchildren, and her youngest son is a Navy commander stationed in San Diego. David Chang (B.S. 1991, Biological Sciences) graduated from the Indiana University School of Medicine in 1995, and spent the last five years as the medical director of the J.E. Wood Clinic at Pennsylvania Hospital, and assistant clinical professor of medicine at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine. David is currently pursuing a fellowship in sleep medicine at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, New Hampshire. Steven McQueen, Jr. (B.S. 1993, Actuarial Science) is Director of Customer Satisfaction at Cooper Crouse Hinds in Syracuse, New York. His wife, Meg, graduated in 1995 from the College of Liberal Arts. Deborah Patrick (B.S. 1977, Biological Sciences) is a family practice doctor who will be relocating to Bloomington in the coming year. She reports that with her husband, Randy, who is a geologist now studying anthropology at Indiana University, she has had unique opportunities including participating in a mastadon dig with the Indiana State Museum and two trips to Semliki Wildlife Reserve in Uganda. In Uganda, she volunteers as a field worker on ongoing projects there involving habituation of dry habitat chimpanzees and varied geologic field studies. She also provides medical support for the research camp. Deb says she is thankful for the professors who reinforced and augmented her interest in the sciences, especially Professors Joseph Vanable, Michael Forman, Ed Simon, and Anna Berkovitz. Shara Pettit (B.S. 2002, Chemistry) and Owen C. Compton ( B.S. 2003, Chemistry) were married on August 6 in Fort Wayne, Indiana. Both are currently pursuing postdoctoral degrees in Chemistry at the University of California, Davis. James G. Townsel (Ph.D 1968, Biological Sciences) was elected to the rank of Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS). Dr. Townsel received a Science Distinguished Alumnus Award in 1999.
In MemoriamMariam Blackburn Bacon (B.S. 1942; M.S. 1945, Biological
Sciences) passed away on June 25. Dr. Bacon graduated from Indiana University
School of Medicine in 1950. She is survived by her husband, Dr. Argyl
Bacon, and two children.
