Alumni NewsRandy Canfield (BS ’78, Biological Sciences) recently established the SBGi Institute, LLC to provide training on the newly-released IECQ QC080000 Hazardous Substance Process Management technical specification, along with training and consulting for other quality related subjects like ISO 9000, Six Sigma, and Lean. The IECQ specification provides the only internationally recognized third party certification for companies that must comply with the recently enacted European Union's Restriction of Hazardous Substances (RoHS) and Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) directives. Jane L. Lynch (BS ’36) passed away on August 31, 2006 in Riverside, California. She is survived by her husband, Edmund D. Lynch, (BSME ’36) and her son, James R. Lynch(BS ’62 Mathematics). Janet Pernell (BS ’84, Mathematics) won the 2005 National Milken Educator Award. In May 2006, she and her husband were flown to Washington along with other award winners across the country. She received a $25,000 award for the honor. Winning a Milken award to an educator has been compared to winning an Oscar for an actor. Robert Showalter (BS ’73, Earth and Atmospheric Sciences) was recently promoted to CSSI program manager for SETA-II (Systems Engineering Technical Assistance) contract to FAA. Prior to the promotion, he had served as senior systems engineer (weather) for seven years. Michael Thurk (BS ’75, Computer Science) was named chief operating officer of Avaya Inc.
