Alumni NewsFrancisco Basile (Ph.D 1992, Chemistry) has been awarded a 2005 Lindbergh grant for his project entitled "Rapidly Detecting Bacterial Pathogens in Drinking and Waste Water to Prevent Contaminated Water from Being Released for Human Consumption. Franco is an assistant professor in the University of Wyoming Department of Chemistry. Matthew Schantz (B.S., BSEE 1991, Mathematics and Electrical Engineering) reports that almost ten years practicing as a patent attorney with another local firm, he joined the partnership of Bingham McHale LLP in their Intellectual Property & Technology group on April 18, 2005. As a patent attorney, Matt continues to bring his math and EE education and experience to bear on patent issues for innovative clients around the world. Just a few months before that, Matt and his wife, Jeri, welcomed their second child, Isaac, into the family. They are very thankful for these blessings. Robert Kopas (B.S. 1984, Computer Science) is a captain in the U.S. Navy. He has been assigned as the Commanding Officer of the USS Makin Island (LHD 8).
In MemoriamLarry Barrentine (M.S. 1962, Mathematics) passed away in early 2004. Larry had worked for Jones & Laughlin Steel Company in Pittsburgh, PA from about 1962 to 1970, and then for several other companies in Tennessee and Florida. He retired and became a consultant in the 1990s.
