Martha Chiscon receives Indiana Salute to Women Award
Martha
Oakley Chiscon, Professor Emerita of Biological Sciences and Associate
Dean of Science Emerita, was the recipient of The Indiana Torchbearer
Award for her varied contributions to education. The Award was presented
by Maggie Kernan, First Lady of Indiana, at the State’s inaugural
Salute to Women Awards, held September 30, 2004, at the Indianapolis Artsgarden,
hosted by the Indiana Commission for Women. Governor Kernan’s welcome
stated, “Today we honor and recognize the accomplishments of noteworthy
Hoosier women whose achievements have contributed to make Indiana a better
place in which to live, work and raise a family. Each of you has overcome
or removed barriers to equality and serve as an example for other Hoosiers
to effect change.”
Dr. Chiscon retired from Purdue in 2000 after many years of service to
the Department of Biological Sciences and the School of Science. She received
numerous awards over her career for excellence in teaching, service to
students, and advocacy for women in science.
