The Order of the Rising Sun, Gold and Silver Star

The Order of the Rising Sun is a highly prestigious decoration of Japan, established in 1875. It features rays of sunlight radiating from the rising sun. The attachment is shaped into a chrysanthemum.

The Order of the Rising Sun is granted for a person who has performed remarkable public service. The Order itself has six ranks with the Order of the Rising Sun, Gold and Silver Star being the second highest. It is a decoration for individuals of Ministerial rank.

On November 3, 2005, it was announced that the Order of the Rising Sun, Gold and Silver was to be awarded to twelve distinguished figures in the fall of 2005 (8 Japanese and 4 non-Japanese nationals). On November 7, the conferring ceremony was held at the Imperial Palace at which the recipients of the Order of the Rising Sun, Gold and Silver Star received them from the Prim Minister and were granted an audience with the Emperor. Dr. Rita Colwell is the only U.S. citizen to be honored in 2005 for contributions in the field of science and technology.
