1. RULE-BREAKING MOLECULE COULD LEAD TO NON-METAL MAGNETS: Purdue University scientists have uncovered an unusual material that could lead to non-metallic magnets, which might be lighter, cheaper and easier to fabricate than magnets made of metal. http://news.uns.purdue.edu/UNS/html4ever/2004/040202.Wenthold.molecule.html

SCHOOL OF SCIENCE ALUMNI ASSOCIATION CALL FOR NOMINATIONS : If you are interested or know someone who would make a good member of the School of Science Alumni Association (S2A2), the nominating process is now open for board term beginning with the fall meeting. 3. PURDUE PROFESSOR NAMED ACTING NSF DIRECTOR: Arden L. Bement Jr., currently on leave from Purdue's School of Nuclear Engineering is serving as director of the National Science Foundation. http://www.nsf.gov/od/lpa/forum/bement/bement_bio.htm Another Purdue connection at the NSF is the appointment of Sangtae Kim to the Directorate for Computer and Information Science and Engineering (CISE) has named Dr. Sangtae Kim as the new Director for the Division of Shared Cyberinfrastructure, effective February 17, 2004 . Kim, a member of the National Academy of Engineering and a fellow of the American Institute of Medical and Biological Engineers, comes to the NSF from Purdue where he served as the Donald W. Fedderson Distinguished Professor of Mechanical Engineering and Distinguished Professor of Chemical Engineering since 2003. http://www.diggov.org/news/stories/2004/0204/0204_kim_release.jsp

NOMINATIONS SOUGHT FOR THE HAAS AWARD: The Council on the Status of Women at Purdue is seeking nominations for the organization's annual Violet Haas Award, which honors an individual, program or department that has made an outstanding effort toward the advancement of women at the university. http://news.uns.purdue.edu/UNS/html3month/2004/040206.BOT.academic.html

6. LEONID ROKHINSON, assistant professor of physics has received a NATIONAL SCIENCE FOUNDATION CAREER AWARD for the project SPIN DEGREE OF FREEDOM IN HOLE SEMICONDUCTOR NANOSTRUCTURES. http://www.physics.purdue.edu/~leonid/

8. EUGENE SPAFFORD, director of CERIAS and professor of computer science, has received word from the IEEE Computer Society Board of Governors that he has been voted to receive the 2003 Taylor L. Booth Award, "For excellence as an educator, and for outstanding contributions to the definition, materials and practice of information security and computing."
9. A Local group of faculty and researchers have been involved in the STAR experiment at Brookhaven National Laboratory. From the Physics department: Assistant Prof. Fuqiang Wang, Prof. Rolf Scharenberg, Prof. Andrew Hirsch; Research Scientists Blair Stringfellow, Brijesh Srivastava, Olga Barannikova; Postdoc Dennis Reichhold; Grad Students: Jason Ulrey, Terry Tarnowsky, and Levente Molnar. The Chemistry department participant is Prof. Norbert Porile.
10. A group of biology undergraduate students were presenters at the recent Biophysical Society conference in Baltimore .
