Alumni NewsGeorge Avery (B.S. 1989, Chemistry; MPA 1995 Arkansas Little Rock; Ph.D. 2005 Minnesota) was awarded a Doctor of Philosophy in Health Services Research and Policy from the University of Minnesota. His dissertation was a study of the effects of the federal Clinical Laboratory Improvement Act Amendments of 1988 on quality control in the physician office laboratory. He currently teaches statistics and research design as an Assistant Professor in the Psychology Department at the University of Minnesota Duluth and will be returning to Purdue as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Health and Kinesiology in the Spring of 2006. George and his wife Stacy have a four year old son, Cameron. Susan E. Hartman (B.S. 1981, Biology) has been selected by the Consumer Research Council of America for inclusion in the 2004-5 edition of America's Top Family Doctors. Scott Serota (B.S. 1978, Biological Sciences) was listed in the running for Modern Healthcare Magazine’s annual ranking of the 100 Most Powerful People in Healthcare. Scott is President and CEO of the Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association. John A. Smith (B.S. 1969, Chemistry), a 2005 Purdue honorary degree awardee, was recently elected Vice President-Elect of the Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology (FASEB), a federation of 22 biomedical research societies and more than 65,000 member scientists. He will be responsible for coordinating the development of biomedical scientific policy and agency funding recommendations on behalf of FASEB's member societies and their members.
