Profiles of SuccessFrank Brown, Jr., Ph.D. 1969, Chemistry
While at Eli Lilly, Frank was the driving force behind establishing the
Lilly Purdue Alumni Scholarship Fund, a four-year, full ride academic
scholarship that is awarded to one research-oriented freshman in Science
every year. “The idea was that the Purdue alumni of Eli Lilly could
make a real difference if they pooled their money,” he says. “Early
on, we asked employees to donate $25, which isn’t much, but when
300 people each give $25 it can amount to a good fund. Our original goal
was to collect money for two or three years until we had enough to fund
a student, but the money from alumni just poured in. We got about twice
as much as we expected, so we were able to fund a student that first year.”
The first Lilly Purdue Alumni Scholarship was awarded in 1990, and a new
scholarship has been awarded to an outstanding Science first year student
every year since then. Frank currently serves as the Director of the Pharmaceutical Sciences Program in the Purdue University School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences. In addition to his responsibilities for the daily management of this four-year nonprofessional degree program, which currently consists of more than 120 undergraduate students, Frank initiated and developed the Pharmacy Industrial Internship Program. This program offers pharmacy students of all majors the opportunity to serve as summer interns at almost twenty global pharmaceutical companies. Students have interned in several states in the U.S. and in international locations such as Germany and Puerto Rico. Many graduates of the Purdue School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences have been employed by the companies with which they interned. Other graduates have elected to pursue graduate studies at Purdue and at Purdue’s peer institutions. Frank received a Distinguished Alumnus Award from the College of Science in 1991. In 2002 the College of Pharmacy, Nursing and Health Sciences honored Frank with a “Friend of Pharmacy” award, which is the highest recognition that Pharmacy can award to a non-alumnus. Frank serves as a current member of the College of Science Dean’s Leadership Council and of the Chemistry Development Committee. He is also a member of the President’s Council and is a Life Member of the Purdue Alumni Association. Frank also serves as a Visiting Professor of Chemistry, and is the instructor of record for Chemistry 562, Industrial Organic Chemistry, which attracts undergraduate and graduate students from the colleges of Agriculture, Science and Pharmacy. He also serves as an Adjunct Professor in the Purdue Department of Industrial and Physical Pharmacy. Frank is the father of six children, three of whom are Purdue graduates.
Frank is proud that all three are gainfully employed in their respective
chosen fields.
