Alumni NewsMichael A. Goldman (Ph.D. 1981, Biological Sciences) has been appointed Chair of the Department of Biology at San Francisco State University. Helen Hauer (Ph.D. 1969, Chemistry) reports that she and her husband, Harold (Ph.D. 1970, Chemistry), have retired and relocated to Hilton Head, South Carolina, where they bike, go to the beach, and boat on the lagoon behind their house. Jerry Hodge (A.S. 1982, Computer Science) is director of information services at Hamilton Beach/Proctor-Silex in Glen Allen, Virginia. Jerry and his wife have 2 sons, Austin, 7 and Colin, 2, who both love Purdue football. Atul Kumar (M.S. 2000, Computer Science) married Madhu Bansal on May 2, 2004. Carla N. Little (Ph.D. 1998, Biological Sciences) is a research scientist in the Infectious Disease Unit-Virology of the Illinois Department of Public Health. She was one of 10 women awarded the 2005 Women of Achievement award from the Lake County, Illinois YWCA. Carla also reports that she has been elected president of her local school board. Vanessa Baird Norsworthy (B.S. 1990, Biological Sciences) works at Pharmaceutical Validation Consulting in Winter Park, Florida. Christopher Scarpone (B.S. 1980, Biological Sciences) is a chemistry teacher at Westchester High School in Los Angeles. He reports: “I have just celebrated my first year in L.A., after spending the last 17 years in New York and Phoenix. This past year was my 15th as a science teacher. I'm still in shock that this Midwestern boy from Indianapolis now lives near the Pacific Ocean!” Amy Schoon (B.S. 1996, Mathematics Education) is a math teacher at Lafayette Jefferson High School in Lafayette, Indiana. Amy and her husband Ben welcomed the birth of their daughter, Maya Elizabeth Schoon, on May 31, 2005. Gregg Tiemann (B.S. 1973, Mathematics) recently moved back to St. Louis from Los Angeles as Director of Integrated Scheduling for Boeing Integrated Defense Systems. Elaine Wolfe (B.S. 1962, Biological Sciences) retired after 31 years of teaching science, the last 23 years at Guion Creek Middle School in Indianapolis. She plans to spend her retirement working on her professional art career and enjoying the company of her children, grandchildren, friends, and relatives. In MemoriamJim N. Griffin (B.S. 1950, Physics and Mathematics) passed away on November 7, 2004. He was active in the CO Amateur Radio Weather Net, had many hobbies, and was a World War II veteran. Jim is survived by his wife Elizabeth, children Sandra, Karen, William, and James, 6 grandchildren and 1 great grandchild. Frederick L. Lisman (Ph.D. 1965, Chemistry) died on June 3, 2005. Fred was a resident of Milford, CT, where he was Mayor for 6 terms. Prior to that he was associate professor of chemistry at Fairfield University and Senior Scientist at the National Reactor Testing Station in Idaho. His wife, Barbara, received her M.S. in chemistry in 1963.
