Planning Retreat Purpose
The purpose of the College of Science May 9, 2007 Retreat was for the departments in the College to identify compelling multidisciplinary priorities for the next five years (2007-2012). Faculty listened to presentations by the white paper authors and met with colleagues to discuss how the areas align with College and departmental hiring priorities. The Retreat built upon the successful strategic planning and COALESCE initiative begun in 2002-2003 (http://www.science.purdue.edu/COALESCE/), which identified seven multidisciplinary priorities for faculty hiring.
Through COALESCE and normal departmental hiring, the College's faculty size is heading to a net growth of 60, once some unfilled positions are filled. All "new" strategic plan slots that were given to the College from the Provost's office have been exhausted. For future searches, the plan is to allocate roughly 20% of the normal search authorizations for searches in targeted multidisciplinary priorities, which equates to about three faculty slots per year. The faculty slots will be allocated to leverage other hiring commitments made by multiple departments and colleges in order to ensure strong buy-in and coordination and to magnify the effect.
All presented white papers are available for review.
