Criteria for Selection of Strategic Hiring Proposals

(APPROVED by the College Hiring Priorities Committee on Friday March 2, 2007)

  1. Identification of a research problem or area that requires a multidisciplinary approach or demonstrably enhances research in multiple disciplines

  2. Scientific merit and potential for societal impact

  3. Strong multi-departmental interest within the College and/or the University.

The impact of strategic hires in an area will be amplified if one or more departments identify the same or a closely-coupled research area as a departmental priority to the extent that they commit core hiring slots or other relevant resources. The departmental commitments need not match or exceed the strategic hiring commitment.

  1. Existence of critical mass at Purdue coupled with the availability of a strong and diverse candidate pool

  2. Federal, Corporate, and public/private interest

This includes the availability of appropriate funding to support research and graduate education in an area, but also less tangible factors such as visibility and public appreciation of the research outcomes. Appropriate funding does not equate to "big funding" but does imply the prospects for continuity of funding as the state-of-the-science evolves.

  1. Ability to leverage relationships with one or more centers at Discovery Park for greater access to expertise, technology, staff, and possibly money

  2. Synergy with hiring priorities in other Colleges, Schools, and departments.

Synergy may be reflected in the ability to make strategic use of joint or courtesy appointments so as to share or leverage start up costs.

Synergy may be reflected in the ability to apply a COS research strength in new areas, especially areas that are traditionally associated with other academic units and are strengths in those units.

  1. Alignment with the University strategic plan so as to enhance access to central resources

NOTES:

It is understood that not all proposals will address all criteria with equal weight.

It is understood that (8) is affected by timing issues in the sense that University planning efforts may not be completed in time to apply these criteria with reference to definitive plans.
