College of Science

Program Goals:

The goals of the Women in Science Programs (WISP) are to provide support, increase self-esteem, promote specific strategies, and increase retention of a diverse population of students in the College of Science.

In 2003, the College of Science reorganized its long standing Multicultural Science Program (MSP) and its more recently developed Women in Science Programs (WISP) under a single umbrella named the Science Diversity Office (SDO). The overall goal of SDO is to recruit and retain high ability students to Purdue’s College of Science programs while contributing to the University goals for a more diverse student population, and ultimately, workforce.

Program Objectives:

1. To provide a method or program for more experienced students (Mentors) to easily support less experienced students (Mentees).
2. To enhance self-esteem for Mentors and Mentees.
3. To generate an opportunity for Mentors and Mentees to share with each other effective strategies to utilize as students who are women in science

Program Philosophy:

Mentoring is a unique relationship for it is an interaction in which both the Mentor and the Mentee benefit by:

  • participating actively in the program
  • appreciating each other
  • providing personal support
  • building self-esteem
  • sharing and utilizing effective strategies

Program Participants:

A Mentee is someone who is...

  • a "less experienced" student
  • gaining support from more advanced students during a time of transition
  • being affirmed by other students over a period of time in order to increase self-esteem
  • learning strategies from other students

A Mentor is someone who is...

  • a "more experienced" student
  • guiding less advanced students during a time of transition
  • reinforcing fellow students throughout the year
  • coaching other students to utilize effective strategies

Program Benefits:

WISP will help students increase personal support, enhance self-esteem and gain effective strategies in order to obtain their desired degree.
