Student Activities

While the main focus of Purdue College of Science Outreach is teacher support, we also offer programs aimed at engaging students and parents in the excitement of science. Click on underlined titles to learn more about each program.

Student engaged in a Science K-12 Outreach activity Focus on Science - Focus on Science is a full week of hands-on science activities in elementary schools. This program seeks to excite and enlighten students about the importance of science in their daily lives. It exposes teachers to classroom activities that combine excitement, cooperative learning, and participatory activities with real-world relevance. Highlights of the week include a convocation of science demonstrations, grade-level hands-on science activities for each day, and an evening parent-student hands-on activity. Teacher in-service programs are provided also. Focus on Science Program Information (.pdf)

Math Field Day - Math Field Day is hosted by the Purdue Mathematics Education Club and Science K-12 Outreach at Purdue University. The objective of Math Field Day is to provide middle school students with an experience that emphasizes applications of mathematics, problem solving, and teamwork while providing Purdue pre-service teachers with valuable experience in preparing mathematical activities and teaching.

Milton is Missing - Milton is Missing is a forensics activity that introduces students to integrated science education. The activity is an investigation of the disappearance of a summer camp mascot Milton. Students work together to test an array of evidence in determining who the most likely suspect is. The student teams are guided through various processes like chromatography and blood typing similar to that which is done by actual scientist. The collected evidence includes thread, soda, marker, cereal, candy, and other items discovered. The Outreach Coordinators will lead the final data analysis and explanation of processes.

Unearthing a Mystery, a Paleontology Dig - The Paleontology Dig is an inquiry activity in which students and teachers work together to unearth and assemble a skeleton. This activity addresses the skeletal system, communication, teamwork, and scientific facts about the natural world.

Science Olympiad - Students teams consisting of 15 members per team from more than 20 schools compete in 23 different science, engineering, and technology events. The events are designed to stress science concepts and knowledge, science processes and thinking skills or science applications and technology. In 2006 Purdue University is honored to host the State Science Olympiad Competition.
