Long Term Partnerships

College of Science K-12 Outreach will develop long-term partnerships with schools and/or school corporations to improve science and mathematics education by identifying needs, obtaining resources, and conducting evaluations. Students involved in a Science K-12 Outreach ActivityImprovement begins with the use of data to clarify goals. Data patterns can provide direction to develop effective programs for change. Partnership programs can include:

The Frankfort Science Partnership and the Shelbyville Collaboration are two partnerships in progress.

Frankfort Science Partnership

In Spring of 2005 the College of Science K-12 Outreach launched a Science Partnership with the Community Schools of Frankfort. The partnership is a three year $300,000 project funded by the Indiana Department of Education. Goals for the partnership are to improve the quality of science education provided by elementary teachers and to develop scientific literacy in all students. Eighteen teachers representing all four elementary schools in Frankfort are participating in the first year of the partnership. The partnership includes a two-week summer workshop, a summer science camp for approximately 100 elementary students weekly visits by Outreach Coordinators, videotaped science lessons for project assessment, and training throughout the school year.

Shelbyville Central Schools Collaboration

College of Science K-12 Outreach Coordinators are working with elementary, middle, and high school teachers at Shelbyville Central Schools. The teachers have worked on inquiry-based science activities and developed standards-based science lessons that they will conduct in class. The workshops are part of Shelbyville's plan to improve science instruction. In 2006-2007 Shelbyville Central Schools are planning on hosting an elementary science extravaganza which will allow teachers to implement more inquiry-based science instruction with their students.
