From: Alan H. Welch, Director of Advising
Subject: Advising and Registration for Spring 2008
Date: October 3, 2007
Make an appointment now to review your plan of study from here to graduation. We'll also take care of registration issues for Spring 2008 at that time. If you can't get an appointment before October Break, you may email me your choice of classes after October 10. You will still need to make a half hour appointment to talk to me about long term graduation issues, but you will not have to worry about getting an early appointment. We'll talk about a long-term plan of study and probably "future" your Fall 2008 classes when we meet.
When you email your list of courses for the Fall 2008 semester, be sure to give complete subject and course numbers (C S 352, not 'compilers'). Don't request any more than 18 credits or two science/technical courses through email...when we talk in person, there may be good reason to go over that load. Also be sure to include your complete name and the semester that you are requesting (Spring 2008, Summer 2008, or Fall 2008)
I will register all students who have met with me or have a completed plan of study on file on the first day the registration system opens, which is October 8. I will continue to register students as I get your emailed schedules. However, your registration won't be complete until we have our 1/2 hour advising appointment. Keep reading the semi-regular e-newsletter for the latest information.
You are also responsible for the following information.
- You can get your progress report from SSINFO
. You may want to use it to design a plan of study for yourself. This
is the sort of thing we'll review when you come for your advising appointment.
Be sure that the progress report reflects accurate information. I also
have copies of your progress report in my office. If you are contemplating another
major at Purdue, you might try using the "what-if" feature
in SSINFO to try a progress report in the new major.
- Sign up for an advising appointment with me with the receptionist
in Room 231 or by calling 49-41771. My walk-in times
are for short questions, drop/add, etc., not for registration.
If you cannot make your appointment, please call to cancel your appointment.
As you probably know, my schedule is pretty tight. Send me some email
or drop me a note if my schedule doesn't fit with yours. I'll work something
out.
- Look at Purdue
Courses web site (available October 5). Plan your tentative spring
schedule, checking to see that there are no conflicts in the courses
you wish to take. Be sure to have at least one course in mind for the
General Education Requirements! You might also look at http://www.science.purdue.edu/core/index.asp off of the "For Current Students" page.
- If you want a block of free time for next spring, submit a letter
from your employer to me when you register for classes. I cannot
give you any guarantee about time blocks entered later in the process.
- For your reference, the last day to drop a course is October 24!. If your semester classification is '1' or '2' a W will be recorded no matter what your grade is; otherwise you will receive a W or WF at the instructor’s discretion. Please come to see me as soon as possible if you are contemplating dropping a class so that you can avoid the chaos in the office that last week. I will be out of the office from October 15 through October 22. Please note that in trying to contact me.
Because of other job responsibilities, I may not be available when you need to see me. Please contact me through e-mail at welch@purdue.edu. I will be glad to try to work something out with you.
In addition to choosing your classes for next semester, you may want to talk about other things affecting your life at Purdue. If you are having doubts about your present educational goals, be sure to ask me about the College of Science Career Opportunities program.
Good Luck in your next set of exams.
