Educational Background

Bachelor of Arts in Mathematics; Angelo State University, San Angelo, Texas.

Master of Education in Guidance and Counseling; Angelo State University, San Angelo, Texas.

Work Background

My first position after college was not dealing directly with students. So, as soon as I could, I moved to the counseling center at that college as an academic advisor. Although my focus was mainly on students with disabilities, I also worked with the general student population in a variety of academic and vocational/technical programs.

In order to be closer to my sister and her kids, I left Odessa/Midland, Texas and moved to West Lafayette in January 2001. In June 2001 I began my current position as Academic Advisor for Computer Sciences.

Hobbies/Interests

Outside of work I mainly spend time with my Chihuahua . I also try to spend as much time with my two-year-old niece, Sara, and her new baby brother, Michael. (When you visit my office you will see plenty of pictures of them.) I enjoy watching sports on television like football, WNBA, tennis, and golf. I also like watching Trading Spaces and dramas like NYPD Blue, Law and Order and ER. I do enjoy camping and mild hiking when I get the chance.

I have a very definite interest in diversity issues. I work to promote acceptance of ALL people no matter what race, creed, gender or sexual orientation.

Goals

My goal can best be summed up with my current philosophy of academic advising: being there for all students at all times; and helping students make informed, logical decisions by providing accurate information and helping them learn about themselves.

Advice for Students

Take advantage of the opportunities Purdue has to offer. You are now in a population filled with diversity. Take the time to learn about other people and cultures. Expand your experiences by getting involved in a student organization not related to your major. And most of all, always balance work and fun.
